Darina Zaduryan, Second Alto: "Unison is the most important thing in a choir"
Darina Zaduryan has sung second alto in "Morski Zvutsi" since March 2026. In an interview with Ralitsa Staneva she tells how conductor Dr. Valentina Georgieva brought her to the choir, why unison matters most in a choir, what she values in her conductor, and where she sings when she is alone.
She was born in Balchik. As a child she sang in the town's children's choir under Vazkresia Devetakova. Today she works at a real estate agency, where she handles the paperwork for property deals. She also sings in the mixed choir "Chernomorski Zvutsi", where she still performs today.
Dr. Valentina Georgieva brought her to "Morski Zvutsi". The two have sung together for more than 20 years, so for Darina this was a familiar path.
In her view, unison is the most important thing in a choir. "Unison is the most important thing in a choir, because the art of choral singing is something we do together. Even if a voice is not very strong or very good, when it is in unison with the others, we have art."
About the conductor, she values how much effort she puts into keeping up with new trends in choral art. "I also value her patience, and the way she treats the singers as equals. She does not suppress. On the contrary, if you let her, she lifts you up."
"Choral singing is an excellent way to master your ego."
When nobody is listening, Darina sings almost everywhere, but most often in the car, especially when she drives out of town. She has more time there, and she is alone.
Concert or rehearsal? "I love both, but if I have to choose, I choose the concert, because the emotion on stage is indescribable."
Until recently she preferred films. For some time now she has been listening to books, because she cannot read for long periods, and now she prefers to listen.
Dreamer or realist? "At 50-plus it is very hard to be a dreamer, although I would like to be, but I am a realist."
