For Milena, “Morski Zvutsi” is destiny in the most literal sense: her father brought her to the choir, and in the choir she met her husband. She sings alto, he sings bass – and their son is on his way to becoming a third-generation chorister.
The Journey
My father Kalcho – a long-time singer in all three ensembles (the Chamber, the Men’s and the Mixed choir) – took me to an audition with Maestro Chonev back in 1995.
And one legendary tour of the choir in Israel turned out to be fateful for my marital status – that is where my family began, with Yordan Stoyanov, a brilliant bass in “Morski Zvutsi” to this day. And so – from two choristers, the result is one guitarist: our son David, a graduate of the Music School, whom we hope to soon welcome to the men’s parts as a third-generation chorister.
For as long as I can remember, I have been on choir camps and tours. My first encounter with this boutique art was in the School Choir, then in the “Dobri Hristov” Children’s Choir, all the way to the fateful “Morski Zvutsi”.
By profession I teach English to children. And in the choir I myself learn tolerance – because we are all very different and colourful, yet we strive to sing in sync for the sake of a common goal.
It feels like magic to me – how, from lifeless sheets of notes, little by little we create something alive, meaningful, beautiful.
Trivia
🎵 A second-generation chorister – her father Kalcho sang in all three ensembles: the Chamber, the Men’s and the Mixed choir.
💍 She met her husband Yordan in the choir – she is an alto, he is a bass, and their family began on a tour in Israel. At rehearsals he sits right behind her – and we delight in their voices.
🎸 Their son David is a guitarist and a graduate of the Music School – expected in the men’s parts as a third-generation chorister!
📚 She teaches English to children, while the choir teaches her tolerance.
“The road to the goal matters more than the goal itself. For me, the rehearsal process is even more exciting than the concerts.”
